Meet The Founders

Brian Pearsall and Alex Seidel

We're Alex and Brian, childhood best friends turned business partners. Two passionate guys with a drive to help people connect on a deeper level. Gardening and growing food is something we love doing and it has served as the gateway for that connection. Gardening is a fundamental human skill that benefits all who possess it. It is truly empowering and especially serves to empower in areas that experience higher rates of food insecurity. It helps challenge an unsustainable food system and works in slow incremental ways to create a larger scale shift...one garden at a time.

We grew up together in South Jersey, graduated from Lenape High School in Medford in 2009 and then both went on to graduate from Rutgers University in Camden. Backyard Gardens was born out of our desire to provide others with the ability to provide for themselves. We've spent time working and learning on local small scale organic farms in the area and also journeyed around Europe, expanding that knowledge base working on large garden and homestead set-ups. Gardening is a lifelong journey full of continued growth that we will be on for the rest of our days.

At Backyard Gardens, we build the highest quality gardens, with a focus on longevity both structurally and aesthetically to keep things looking good all year round. We ensure that the gardener is set up for long term success. We take pride in the craftsmanship of our work and stand by it 100%.

Our philosophy of business is to remain connected. Communication is a foundation of how we run things, keeping you in the loop every step of the way. The relationships we build with our customers last well beyond completion of the garden construction. Our goal is to make sure the customer is set up for success and we can remain involved as long as necessary. Everyone is different in terms of when they are ready to take on the task themselves. Some more experienced gardeners are ready to take the reins immediately, while others need several seasons of guidance and assistance to get them on their way. There are some people who don't have to time to invest into their garden and we can set up a system to cater to all. The ultimate goal is to get the gardener on their own, connecting to the plants and their food and growing for themselves, but we completely understand that isn't always the case for everyone.
